Students placed 2,977 flags on the front lawn of the Academy on the morning of Sept. 10. Each flag represents the life of a person who died in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. This annual memorial was started in 2007 by the Student Government Organization. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the program of readings and songs, along with a guest speaker, did not take place. Past speakers have included State Senator Amanda Chase; Jamie Inman, retired Colonel and former Chief of Staff, Virginia Military Institute; and James Triesler, Director of Education, Virginia War Memorial. Next year, the SGO plans to resume the ceremony for the school and the community.
